The Honourable Supreme Court agreed to hear the OBC reservation matter on May 8, 2007. It may be termed as a victory for HRD Minister Arjun Singh. Now the SC has given 10 days to all sides to prepare their pleadings. One has to wonder now what kind of implications this decision might have on the outcome of the case? The fact of the matter is that the case will be decided on evidence and the main issue is the Constituionality of the Act under dispute. It is highly unlikely that the UPA government will come up with new facts to get a decision in its favour. This early hearing date of May 8, 2007 might just give the Supreme Court's final decision on the issue of OBC reservation in Higher Education Institutions run by the Government. The HRD Minister might have shot on his own foot in a hurry.
