In the history of free India, this is the first time when the Central government has acted irresponsibly while dealing with a delicate constitutional issue. It is a sad phase in Indian democracy when the Constitution has been used to advance political agenda and strengthen the vote banks. It is my view that this case will turn out to be a landmark development for the future of India. Since 1947 all governments have done nothing to uplift the people. If you give education to all children, you would not have to worry about quota or reservation. The same maid has been working at my home in India for more than 20 years. Is this upliftment of SC/ST/OBCs? Sooner or later, India has to realize that elections and politics should be based on "what have you done for us?" and "what do you plan to do for us if you win the election?" These are the questions that Indians must ask politicians during the elections.
The NDTV.Com reports, "the following are some of the questions that the larger bench will look into:
What is the government's yardstick for measuring backwardness and how are the beneficiaries identified?
Should the concept of creamy layer apply to admissions as is the case in jobs?
Should the term Socially and Educationally Backward be replaced with Socially and Economically Backward?"
We should wait for the final verdict by the Constitutional Bench of the Honourable Supreme Court. It is my hope that the final verdict will put the break on government's tendency to amend the Constitution for political gains and create further inequalities in the society.
