Law of land will be supreme in Afzal Guru case: Kalam- Hindustan Times
Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam has once again shown his astute statesmanship. Indeed the Indian law will take its course on the matter of death penalty for Mohammend Afzal Guru. It is unfortunate that Dr. Kalam is not the Prime Minister of India. UPA government led by Dr Manmohan Singh has compromised with India's national security by closing its eyes on terrorism with the single purpose of wooing Muslim votes. Dr. Kalam is right, development politics is the key to India's future. Lets hope that vigilant opposition parties, the honourable Supreme Court and people of India will not let UPA government cause serious harm to India's constitution and its secular nature. Since 2004 UPA government has done nothing but divide the people and carry out repeated insults to the Constitution and Constitutional institutions. The debate about supremacy of the Parliament is politically motivated. There is no dispute about Parliament's powers to exact laws. At the same time there can be no dispute that the Supreme Court has the power to decide whether a law is constitutional or not. Parliament does not have the authority to tinker with the original fundamental principles on which the Constitution is based.
